Best Friends
Some friends play at friendship but a true friend sticks closer than a brother. Prov 18:24

Popularity is the ultimate dream for many people today. Just look at the whole phenomenon of music and sports stars. Lots of young people running around with NFL, NBA or NASCAR jerseys. We drool over these people because they are so incredibly popular. People will pay lots of money to watch them perform. We want their autographs, their name brand clothes, and so on. I remember my own quest in high school to be considered a part of the "popular crowd".

According to today’s social wisdom,, having a lot of friends appears to be the ultimate good. The more popular you are, the better off you will be. Favors will more likely come your way if you’ve got good ratings with a ton of people.

Apparently the writer of Proverbs felt differently. The warning in Proverbs 18:24 has to do with the critical role that a really good friend needs to play in your life. "Companions" are those who just hang around you and tend to be with you mostly for what you can do for them. What Jesus wants you to have is a friend that sticks closer than a brother or sister. Someone who accepts you as you are but who also helps you become the best you can be; who tells you how good you are, but what needs improved. Not all of us have a friend who fits that description. But don’t forget that Jesus is a better Friend than any other you’ll ever find! Jesus is not only near you - he’s right inside you. Always!
